Founder of
Kerala Kalamandalam

Over 90 years ago in a tiny village of Cheruthuruthy great poet Vallathol and his friend Sri. Mukunda Raja decided to bring to life again one of the highest forms of theatre and dancing - Kathakali.

Being a man of great courage and initiative he started the Kerala Kalamandalam with Sri. Mukundaraja with the avowed objective of fostering all the quintessential indigenous art forms of Kerala.

Sri. Kakkad Karanavappad Kunjunni Raja under whose patronage kalamandalam was set up used to emphasise that only Vallathol with his unique personality endearing to all, fame as a great poet and his great drive could make Kalamandalam see the light of the day. vallathol projected the soft power of the country to the world stage in a huge way through Kathakali and other quintessential art form of India !!

Vallathol and
Mahatma Gandhi

Just like Gandhiji, Vallathol was an ardent patriot and a global citizen. Both views were complementary. Vallathol was fascinated by Gandhiji's world view as one family. So he accepted him as his Guru (master) and wrote many poems extolling the virtues of Mahatma Gandhi the most famous of which was 'Ente Gurunathan' which begins with words Lokame Tharavade (वासुदेवा कुडुंबक्कम)...

Vallathol describes Gandhiji thus : only the land that is the mother of Gita could bring forth a Karmayogi of this calibre.

For Gandhiji, (and for Vallathol too) world was one family in which even the plants, weeds and worms are members.
